Jawbone restoration

What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a procedure that rebuilds areas of the jawbone that have lost density or volume due to tooth loss, gum disease, or trauma. The process involves placing bone graft material in areas where bone has deteriorated, allowing new healthy bone to grow and create a solid foundation for dental implants.

Without adequate bone support, dental implants cannot be placed successfully or may fail over time. At Imagine Your Smile in Woodbury, MN, Dr. Wilhelm uses advanced bone grafting techniques to restore proper bone volume and density. The grafted area heals over several months, creating the strong foundation needed for long-lasting implant success.

Foundation for Success

Benefits of Bone Grafting

Bone grafting restores lost jawbone structure and creates a solid foundation for dental implants. This preparatory procedure ensures long-term treatment success and preserves your facial appearance.

Qualify for Dental Implants

Don’t let bone loss prevent you from getting the permanent tooth replacement you want. Bone grafting rebuilds your jawbone to the proper density and volume needed to support stable, long-lasting dental implants.

Maintain Your Facial Structure

Bone loss can cause your face to appear sunken and aged beyond your years. Grafting preserves your natural facial contours and prevents the hollow, collapsed look that comes with missing teeth and deteriorating bone.

Prevent Further Bone Loss

Once bone loss begins, it continues to worsen over time without intervention. Bone grafting stops this progressive deterioration, protecting your remaining bone structure and preventing future complications.

Stronger Foundation for Life

A rebuilt jawbone provides the solid foundation your replacement teeth need to function like natural teeth. This means you can bite, chew, and speak with confidence, knowing your new teeth are securely supported.

Better Treatment Outcomes

Starting with adequate bone ensures your dental implants or other treatments have the best chance of success. This investment in your foundation pays off with treatments that last longer and function better.

Preserve Remaining Teeth

When bone deteriorates around one area, it can affect the stability of nearby teeth. Bone grafting helps maintain the support structure your natural teeth need to stay healthy and secure.

Enhanced Comfort and Fit

Adequate bone structure ensures dentures and other prosthetics fit properly and comfortably. No more dealing with loose, painful appliances that slip and cause embarrassment in social situations.

Simplified Future Procedures

Having sufficient bone makes any future dental work easier and more predictable. This means shorter appointments, better results, and less stress when you need additional dental care.

Protect Your Investment

Bone grafting ensures your dental treatments last as long as possible, protecting the time and money you invest in your oral health. It’s a smart foundation that supports all your future dental decisions.

Confidence in Your Smile

Knowing you have a strong, healthy jawbone gives you peace of mind about your oral health future. You can move forward with confidence, knowing you’ve addressed the underlying issues that could cause problems later.

A Solution for Many

Who Is Bone Grafting For?

Bone grafting helps patients who need stronger jawbone support for dental implants or want to prevent further bone loss. Many people face jawbone deterioration, and you’re not alone in needing this foundational treatment.

Patients Planning Dental Implants

You need adequate bone density to support implants, and bone grafting creates the strong foundation necessary for successful, long-lasting results.

Those with Bone Loss from Missing Teeth

When teeth are lost, the jawbone naturally shrinks over time, affecting your facial structure and making future tooth replacement more challenging.

People with Gum Disease Damage

Advanced gum disease can destroy the bone that supports your teeth, and grafting helps rebuild this essential foundation for oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bone Grafting FAQs

Bone grafting might sound complex, but it’s a common procedure that helps restore your jawbone for dental implants. At Imagine Your Smile in Woodbury, MN, Dr. Wilhelm uses advanced techniques to rebuild lost bone and prepare your smile for successful treatment.

What exactly is bone grafting?

Bone grafting is a procedure where we place bone material in areas of your jaw where bone has been lost or thinned. This material fuses with your existing jawbone through a natural process called osseointegration, creating a stronger foundation. The grafted area becomes part of your natural bone structure, providing the solid base needed for dental implants.
Yes, if you’re planning to replace your extracted tooth with a dental implant, Dr. Wilhelm can perform bone grafting during the same appointment. This preserves your jawbone and prevents teeth from shifting into the empty space, making future implant placement more successful and predictable.
The healing process typically takes 3-6 months, depending on the size and location of the graft. During this time, the graft material integrates with your existing bone, creating new, healthy tissue. Dr. Wilhelm monitors your progress throughout healing to ensure optimal results before proceeding with implant placement.
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during and after bone grafting. Dr. Wilhelm uses local anesthetic during the procedure, and we offer oral sedation for enhanced comfort. Post-procedure discomfort is typically mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain medication. Many patients are surprised by how comfortable the entire process is.
We provide several bone grafting procedures including ridge augmentation to restore uneven jaw areas, sinus lifts for upper molar implants, and socket preservation after extractions. Each technique addresses specific bone loss situations. Dr. Wilhelm evaluates your individual needs to determine which approach will give you the best long-term results.
This depends on your current bone volume and density. Dr. Wilhelm uses advanced imaging to assess whether you have sufficient bone for immediate implant placement. In some cases, strategic implant positioning can work around minor bone loss, but significant deficiencies typically require grafting for predictable, successful outcomes.
We use high-quality bone graft materials that are safe and effective for integration with your natural bone. These materials provide a scaffold for your body to build new bone tissue. Dr. Wilhelm selects the most appropriate material based on your specific situation and treatment goals.
Bone grafting has a very high success rate when performed by experienced professionals like Dr. Wilhelm. The procedure has been refined over decades and is considered a reliable method for restoring jawbone volume. Success depends on following post-operative instructions and maintaining good oral hygiene during healing.
Yes, socket preservation combines extraction with immediate bone grafting to prevent bone loss. This proactive approach maintains your jawbone structure and often eliminates the need for more extensive grafting later. Dr. Wilhelm can perform both procedures during the same appointment, saving you time and optimizing your treatment outcome.
Bone grafting costs vary based on the procedure type, graft material, and treatment complexity. During your consultation, we provide transparent pricing and discuss financing options including CareCredit. While bone grafting represents an additional investment, it’s essential for ensuring long-term implant success and protecting your oral health.

Dr. Wilhem and his team have been absolutely and unequivocally fantastic. I was involved in a traumatic, near-fatal accident. I had suffered a broken maxilla (upper jaw) and so needed extensive dental work. I am a professional so my appearance and public speaking is exceedingly important in my career. After my accident, I felt I had to come to terms with the fact that my smile and ability to speak were going to be permanently compromised and that I just had to learn to live with it. Thankfully I found Dr. Wilhelm. I received Dr. Wilhem’s name through a colleague who had experienced similar dental trauma and also needed extensive work. I saw her smile be fully restored and witnessed the confidence that it brought back to her life. My dental journey is done now. I have my smile back thanks to Dr. Wilhelm. My smile is natural-looking and beautiful and I would even say is better than before my accident. I never thought I would be able to say that. Thank you to Dr. Wilhem and to your team. I will not stop smiling all thanks to you 😁
