Balance your bite

What Is Occlusal Adjustment?

view from false tooth implant fixed jawbone 3d 3d illustration 2124

Occlusal adjustment is a precise procedure that reshapes the biting surfaces of your teeth to create proper contact between upper and lower teeth when you bite down. This treatment corrects bite irregularities that can cause jaw pain, tooth wear, and other functional problems by ensuring even pressure distribution across all teeth.

The procedure at Imagine Your Smile in Woodbury, MN involves carefully analyzing your bite pattern and making minor adjustments to specific tooth surfaces that are causing interference. These small modifications can significantly improve jaw comfort and prevent excessive wear on certain teeth while promoting better overall oral function.

Balanced Bite, Better Life

Benefits of
Occlusal Adjustment

Occlusal adjustment aligns your bite for comfortable chewing and reduced strain. A properly balanced bite protects your teeth and eliminates
daily discomfort.

Chew Without Jaw Pain

Eat meals comfortably without your jaw aching or feeling tired after chewing. A balanced bite distributes pressure evenly, eliminating the strain that causes jaw soreness during and after meals.

Stop Waking Up with Headaches

Start your mornings pain-free instead of dealing with tension headaches from nighttime clenching. Proper bite alignment reduces the muscle strain that causes morning headaches and facial pain.

Protect Your Dental Work

Keep crowns, fillings, and other restorations from breaking due to uneven bite pressure. A balanced bite ensures your dental work lasts longer, saving you money on repairs and replacements.

Speak More Clearly

Pronounce words correctly when your teeth come together properly during speech. A well-aligned bite improves your articulation, making you sound more confident and professional in conversations.

Reduce Tooth Sensitivity

Stop sudden pain when drinking cold beverages or eating sweet foods. Proper bite alignment prevents excessive pressure that can cause tooth sensitivity and makes eating enjoyable again.

Sleep Better at Night

Rest peacefully without grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw during sleep. A balanced bite reduces the muscle tension that disrupts your sleep and causes morning stiffness.

Save Money on Future Treatment

Prevent expensive dental problems caused by an uneven bite wearing down your teeth. Early correction is more affordable than replacing damaged teeth or treating TMJ disorders later.

Improve Your Facial Appearance

Maintain proper facial support and jaw position that keeps you looking youthful. A balanced bite prevents the facial collapse that can occur when teeth wear unevenly over time.

Eat Your Favorite Foods

Bite into steaks, apples, and crunchy snacks without discomfort or difficulty. Proper bite alignment gives you the confidence to enjoy any food without worrying about pain or damage.

Feel More Comfortable All Day

Go through your daily routine without constant jaw tension or facial muscle fatigue. A balanced bite eliminates the chronic discomfort that affects your mood and energy levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Occlusal Adjustment FAQs

When your bite doesn’t align properly, it can cause discomfort and dental problems. Imagine Your Smile provides precise occlusal adjustments to help Woodbury patients achieve comfortable, harmonious bites that protect their teeth and jaw health.

What is an occlusal adjustment and why might I need one?

An occlusal adjustment involves making small changes to your tooth surfaces so your upper and lower teeth come together properly when you bite. You might need this treatment if you experience jaw pain, uneven tooth wear, or discomfort when chewing. Proper bite alignment prevents future dental problems and improves comfort.
Dr. Wilhelm uses advanced techniques to analyze your bite, including examining wear patterns on your teeth, checking how your jaw moves, and assessing your bite pressure. Signs of bite problems include clicking or popping jaw joints, uneven tooth wear, frequent headaches, or teeth that don’t feel like they fit together naturally.
The procedure itself is typically painless since we only remove small amounts of tooth structure from specific areas. Most patients feel immediate relief from bite-related discomfort. Local anesthetic is rarely needed, but we can provide it if you’re concerned about sensitivity during the adjustment process.
Most occlusal adjustments can be completed in a single appointment lasting 30 to 60 minutes. Complex cases might require multiple visits to achieve optimal results. Dr. Wilhelm works carefully and methodically to ensure your bite feels comfortable and functions properly when the adjustment is complete.
When performed by an experienced prosthodontist like Dr. Wilhelm, occlusal adjustment actually protects your teeth from damage. We remove only tiny amounts of enamel from specific high spots, which is far less than the wear that occurs from an unbalanced bite over time. The procedure prevents future tooth damage.
Yes, bite imbalances often contribute to TMJ disorders. By creating proper tooth contact and reducing stress on your jaw joints, occlusal adjustment can significantly improve TMJ symptoms. This treatment works well alone or in combination with other TMJ therapies like night guards or physical therapy.
Most patients notice immediate improvement in bite comfort and jaw function. Over the following days and weeks, you should experience reduced jaw tension, less tooth sensitivity, and more comfortable chewing. Dr. Wilhelm will schedule follow-up visits to ensure your bite remains stable and comfortable.
You can usually eat normally right after treatment, though some patients prefer softer foods for the first day while adjusting to their new bite. Your teeth and jaw may feel slightly different initially, but this typically resolves within a few days as you adapt to the improved alignment.
Depending on your specific situation, Dr. Wilhelm might recommend a night guard to protect your newly adjusted bite from grinding or clenching during sleep. This helps maintain the results of your occlusal adjustment and prevents future bite problems from developing due to nighttime habits.
When properly performed, occlusal adjustments provide long-lasting results. However, natural tooth wear, dental work, or changes in your jaw position over time might eventually require minor touch-ups. Regular dental check-ups help us monitor your bite and make small adjustments if needed to maintain optimal function.

Dr. Wilhem and his team have been absolutely and unequivocally fantastic. I was involved in a traumatic, near-fatal accident. I had suffered a broken maxilla (upper jaw) and so needed extensive dental work. I am a professional so my appearance and public speaking is exceedingly important in my career. After my accident, I felt I had to come to terms with the fact that my smile and ability to speak were going to be permanently compromised and that I just had to learn to live with it. Thankfully I found Dr. Wilhelm. I received Dr. Wilhem’s name through a colleague who had experienced similar dental trauma and also needed extensive work. I saw her smile be fully restored and witnessed the confidence that it brought back to her life. My dental journey is done now. I have my smile back thanks to Dr. Wilhelm. My smile is natural-looking and beautiful and I would even say is better than before my accident. I never thought I would be able to say that. Thank you to Dr. Wilhem and to your team. I will not stop smiling all thanks to you 😁
